-Dubai 06 June,
2010 – The Philippine Consulate General will start accepting and
processing applications for the new Electronic Passport (ePassport) on 14 June 2010. The issuance of the Machine Readable Passports (MRP) will therefore cease
on the same date. However, valid MRPs and green passports will still be honored as acceptable bona fide travel documents issued by the Government of
the Philippines until these expire. An ePassport has an embedded IC chip where the photograph and personal information of the bearer are stored in accordance with specifications from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The new passport is highly secure, i.e., it has features that prevent passport reproduction and tampering. It also facilitates fast clearance of travellers at immigration checks. As a member of ICAO, the Philippines has an obligation to enhance the security of its passports. Countries have greater confidence and acceptance of the ePassport since it is enhanced with biometrics technology. ePassports are already being used by more than 60 countries worldwide. Ass
